An early photograph of a baby anteater in a tree in Aldrich Park (formerly Campus Park), ca. 1968. Is this cute, or what?

Most anteater aficionados know that the UCI mascot was inspired by a character in the Johnny Hart comic strip “B.C.” Few know that Mr. Hart liked the anteater mascot concept. He even completed an original drawing of the anteater, which he sent to UCI… apparently later than expected!

Baby anteater hanging around UCI campus, circa 1968.
Over the years mascots have been subjected to countless dangers and humilities. Peter the Anteater is no exception. Witness here photographic evidence.
